Yummy pork chile verde. The burrito smothered is my favorite! Not too pricey!

This place is dirty and poorly managed, but we always always get new menus, why because the prices keep going up, they must use diesel in the food for the price to keep changing, the service is horrible and the food is out of a can. The burritos at taco bell have more flavor. want good Mexican food drive to woods Cross and eat at Lorena's. Great food and service and the prices are very fair.

Good mexican food (i'm a critic, since ive had it in my brooklyn hood, texas, and california, too.) Generous portions. Gigantic venue. Fed four of us for $60 and that included some beer, soda, and margaritas. Not bad at all!

WOW! We ordered for 3 for take out, and ordered a few large combinations and some bean and cheese burritos. Everything was perfect, especially since one of the combos was a special order with the lettuce/tomato on the side for everything. It was all perfect, nothing was missing, and the taste was bomb! I've never had this place before and it was DELICIOUS! I will definitely be back!

All of the reviews that have negative things to say are outdated. My first time dining here was in 2013 and I was very pleased with my experience. Let me start out with the basics - There's a decently-sized parking lot that they share with Bad Ass, their dining area is very big, and their upholstery is very clean, although out-of-date. We could tell our server was swamped. But her customer service was top-notch as she still answered my numerous questions about the menu gracefully. Yes, sometimes they do set your plates down a little abruptly. But it's a busy restaurant and those plates are very hot and heavy! Who cares if the servers are a little rough with the way they serve your food as long as the food gets to you in one piece without burning their arm? And mind you negative reviewers that their portions are huge! We ordered their combos of 3 and got super full after only finishing 1/3 of it. My friend was very happy with his chicken enchilada and smothered burrito. The only complaint I have about mine is that the only options that come with the tacos are beef and chicken. Also, I thought that the soft taco shells would be small, but these ones were HUGE and thick. But that's okay. I didn't mind it but didn't end up eating it since I'm a little picky about my cheese and there was more than I would've cared for. Overall, La Puente is a place that's definitely comparable to other Mexican establishments. Give a try! And if you're one of the people that complained in 2010 and 2011, get with the times! It's 2015 and they're on their best game now!

My death row meal! I love a Puente smothered burrito more than any other food on the planet. They know how to get that chile verde sauce just right and I always add the cheese and onions with rice and beans. Combined with a Dr. Pepper I don't know how heaven could be any sweeter. I've eaten hundreds of these and keep coming back for more. The photo of departed local giant, the great Pete Suazo hanging over the cash register just makes me all the more convinced I'm having dinner at the right place.

I frequent La Puente and La Frontera A LOT. I've actually come to favor La Puente's flavors over La Frontera's. However, when faced with the decision of which one to hit up, I have to decide whether I want really amazing flavors, but TERRIBLE service. OR, good flavor w/ great attentive service. La Puente has continued to disappoint me with their awful service for MONTHS! The servers act like they hate their jobs. The "hosts" at the front are far from friendly. And the restaurant itself is FILTHY! There's so much dust caked around the lights, walls, decor, etc... *There is, however, one server (glasses w/ hat and ponytail) that is always running her ass off! And, she even does it with a smile. I always hope I get her section when I decide to actually come here. If it weren't for the smothered burritos, I'd stay away from this place.

This place is terrible. I hate the shitty customer service. We walked out once because the family who came after us got served before us. I hate the food. I have never once had something delicious here. The management sucks too. I'm hoping they go out of business but probably not because all the Mormons used to eating bland shit will keep it going.

Not Mexican authentic at all. French fries with stake and beans is just ugly. The tortillas were not even hand made tortillas there were more like Greek pitas. Don't recommend it.

Was not impressed. Everything was mediocre at best. I wouldn't come back. Margarita was all syrup, chicken chimichanga had only chicken it it, hardly any cheese. Sour cream came in a little plastic packet. Meh.

Oh, the things I would do for a smothered burrito at La Puente. By far the best "mexican" food in Salt Lake City. People always ask me what they should get and I tell them that there might as well just be one item on the menu: get the smothered burrito. Just do it. There are a few "tex mex" places of this type in the valley but this is by far the best one. And with the $5 smothered burrito special on the menu, it is great food at a great price.

Came here with my step-dad and had a STELLAR lunch! I am so full of goodness and love! Ok, so we came here with a coupon that we got for the paper so he could get the ribs. I got the smothered bean and cheese burrito with a side of the green chili for dipping chips and extra smother on the burrito. The chili came out very quickly so that we could enjoy the chips and chili before our main course arrived. Our server came back and apologetically told us that there was no rib sauce and he asked to get the chili put on top instead. While this was in fact a devastating thing, they totally made up for it by COMPING his ribs! One of the managers, or a higher up, came by to ask us about the food and to apologize again for not having the rib sauce. She then proceeded to tell us that the ribs were going to be on the house for their mistake. Now THAT is what I call customer service. Don't get me wrong, this place is not fancy, but it is clean and seats 200 people. When we left at 1:30 there were still around 30 tables full of happy diners. They have great food and drink and the price is right! Killer service as well... we will be back again!

Spacious ... good for large parties. I'd like to give it 3-1/2 stars . Homemade Mexican food. On my first visit, I was disappointed with the chorizo and eggs. I didn't like the chorizo flavor. However, the portion was huge. Tortillas are homemade, a little thick and made with vegetable shortening instead of lard ... still good. Second visit was so much better. The chicken flautas were not as crispy as I would like, but pretty good. Third visit today was even better. I had the combo shrimp & chicken fajitas with nice size shrimp and good chicken. They came on a sizzling platter just how I like them. Generous portion of rice and beans with avocado slices. The bottom of the fajita platter was a little oily more than I would prefer. I will request easy on the oil the next time I order them. Very reasonable, good service ... will definitely be back.

I am really disappointed with this restaurant! This is my husband's favorite spot to eat. Every time I go with him the service is awful! We went last night after an exhausting day at work I just wanted to eat and have a margarita. It took 15 minutes to have our waitress greet us and get a drink order. I ordered a margarita on the rocks and a beer for my husband. After waiting 20 minutes to get our drinks my drink order was wrong it was blended. My husband stopped the waitress and asked her if she can fix my drink. The waitress to my surprise was very rude and had argued that I was wrong and ordered a blended drink. When my husband politely asked if she could remake it she had a really bad attitude and replied I guess. I was not impressed at all I told my husband I felt unwelcome and uncomfortable and I wanted to leave. I was a waitress for 6 years and never in my life would I treat a customer the way I have been treated. We will not be back !

This restaurant is frequented by a group of friends and I. The service and food is always quick, delicious, and priced very well. This visit, there was a little situation with another customer (who clearly had way too much to drink) as he targeted us (for whatever reason) approached out table of 4 and made us feel threatened and very uncomfortable, standing up, walking to our table, lifting his shirt very aggressively saying words that would provoke an altercation if we hadn't kept our cool. He literally dropped his shorts exposing his underwear, and did everything to make is feel Un-welcomed. I was on the verge of calling the police. As he asked for another beer from the waiter, I was completely in shock and disappointed that he was actually served another beer acting the way he was acting. I would think, after observing his mannerisms, that they would have refused further service But he wasn't, and another beer was served. A lady by the name of Linda walked over to our table and asked if everything was okay after seeing this. She went to talk to the guy and everything after that was fine, he left shortly. However we were still very uncomfortable. We went up to pay for our meal and after talking to her she was very apologetic and didn't charge us for anything. That was very much appreciated and she did an awesome job at realizing we were faithful customers and told us we were welcomed there anytime. If it wasn't for her I never would have visited that place again. Thank you Linda.

Their chicken smothered burrito with extra smothered sauce is the only thing that keeps me coming back to this place. Which is AMAZING!!. I kept noticing I would get charged a different price everytime i ordered the same thing (chicken smothered burrito with extra smothered sauce) and recently brought it up when placing a phone order, the guy got super rude and defensive which prompted me to ask if he was the owner he said yes. It all just seemed really sketchy to me. If you frequent here just be carefull to watch your tab.

One of the few La Puentes left (evidently, there's been another shake-up in things and some of them have splintered off into La Fountain). This particular one I like a lot less than the one on 3300 S. on the eastside, as it was somewhat dirtier, dingier inside and the decor was probably really nice...when it was put up 2 or 3 decades ago. I can deal with chipped tables and torn vinyl on the bench seats, but when the parking lot is also beat to death and I'm meeting someone there, that kind of thing I find embarrassing. Neither here nor there on this review, but it bears mentioning as I will NOT take anyone to this place, unless they specifically request it because of that. As to the food, this one was a notable step down from the usual La Puente goodness I'd come to know on the East side, all the way down to basically La Frontera levels. The salsa was decent and the chips were relatively fresh. Everyone was overall mostly satisfied with their meals and service was also pretty satisfactory, with the glasses being refilled in a well-timed manner. Still, it seems that time has definitely passed this place by and my suspicions are that were it not for its excellent location, this place would probably be in some trouble otherwise.

perfectly dreadful americanized mexican with gloppy cheese everywhere. 'dumbed down mexican'

Order Fajitas Now..... I always get a mix of chicken and carne asada fajitas. I take the tortillas and split them into thirds. I ORDER an extra tortilla because 2 tortillas is never enough. This meal is good enough to split unless you eat like an NFL linebacker. Tried the burrito on special, wasn't too impressed.

I feel like I'm being punked. If you ask for beef anything, what that really means is canned chili meat enchiladas. We ordered a side of mole which turned out to be a bowl of enchilada sauce. No exageration. The tortillas are more like cold pita bread. Forget rolling, they just fold them into three. That's just a few of the reasons I will never be back. Hands down the worst Mexican food I've had in salt lake. I feel like I was overcharged quite a bit but there's no way to know for sure because your check is just a ticket with a handwritten total. No prices. This place is pretty half a$&. I still prefer Miramar on 1300 s.

Service sucked right from the beginning. Stood waiting to be seated fore quite a while, while three employees stood at the register arguing over something. Waitress made it seem like we were an inconvenience and the food was over priced and looked like they used a microwave to prepare my enchiladas. I will definitely suggest against going back here again. **** I would like to add an edit. I revisited the same location for lunch a couple days ago with some co-workers (their choice of course). Service was much better and still fairly busy. Beto our server made the experience however. He did extremely well, was on top of his game and added a little sense of humor as well. Much better experience. I'll bump this up a couple stars purely based on Beto.

The food was mediocre at best. Even worse was the waitress. Totally disengaged and treated us as such. Service was sadly lacking. No one in my party of 6 will return to this sub standard restaurant.

It was good. They were fast. Got fajitas and they were humongous! Not a fancy place. Wish they had shredded beef or steak though. All they have is ground beef so I ordered chicken. The chicken was good.

I would've given it 4 stars, but you'll see why below. I went with 2 friends who wanted to show me real (or as close as you can get it) Mexican food. Having grown up in Los Angeles, I haven't found that yet here in Utah. Menu didn't fully explain what was in each item, so you had to guess what would be in each thing. I ordered the small combo plate. When it arrived, I couldn't tell where one item began or ended. Overall, it was okay. But, as a disabled person in a wheelchair, I was disappointed to see that, to get to their 2nd floor (where the dining room is), you have to access by a locked elevator. You have to get the attention of an employee whose at the top of the stairs and ask them to unlock the elevator for you to use. I understand locked restrooms to prevent non-customers using them and to prevent graffiti. But, why a locked elevator? What if you're by yourself? How would you get the attention of the staff? I saw 3 others in wheelchairs during my visit. It would save time by just letting the elevators be unlocked the entire time. So, for that, this place gets 3 stars. Come on, La Puente restaurant, change the elevator to not require a key!

Great food. I love the smothered burritos. Every time I have been there I have got great service. Only thing I don't like is if you order food to go instead of staying they don't give you chips and salsa.

well as usual, i am saddened to read dumass reviews. ppl complain about bs and give this place a bad review came here years ago and i remember liking it but dont remember what i had today, had the Smothered Pork Verde Burrito (fantastic) there was chips n salsa on the table and the waitress gladly refilled the chips as we munched and gave recommendation for the smothered burrito chips were very good and salsa is ultra spicy!!! sooo good! beyond satisfied. burrito was excellent with the smothered "wet" style on it and sauce surrounding it. did not have to wait for nothing all the staff were way nice and patient as we tried to figure out what to order will be back here for sure. didn't have time or the stomach to order a bunch of stuff im already fat theres not too much room in here for mass order but my friend did order the Large Combination to take to her folks comes with 5 items, taco, burrito, enchilada and other stuff. massive plate!! don't worry about these dumasses reviews this place is great. i'm from LA which is pretty much Mexico with all the Mexican food joints. enjoy! also, there's a TV and i got to watch Oklahoma City Memphis playoff game. nice

The food at this place is consistently good. There are a few employees that are exceptional. However their management is horrible at customer sevrice. I have have had this experience more then once but never say anything about them. However I'm done with this place not because of the food or the few good employees. It's management. One time I ordered an extra side of ham and the waiter didn't charge me and brought it his attention and he said it's okay you're a good customer. So I went to pay my bill and the cashier got upset with the server in front of me and said it wasn't his choice to not charge me. I stood up for the waiter and told the cashier politely it's because of his customer service that I come here and I'll happily pay so he doesn't get in trouble. This evening I decided to order take out. The NEW cashier was very nice and his polite customer service was refreshing. However when I got home my order was wrong. I called not to complain but to hopefully have them rectify the situation with good service. So of course they had to check the ticket which is understandable....I always order the special with cheese and beans...I got home there was no cheese or beans.... The cashier wrote the correct order but the manager said we'll give you credit for not getting beans....Seriously! I gave her advise on customer service. This place will always do well but they need some HEAVY training on customer service. I will never go back again because of the moody management. They're many restaurants around the valley that serve the same food so they'll get my business instead.

Ate lunch here on 8/9/2013. Service was bad and slow. Food was mediocre and had a nice burned in microwave taste.

I don't know how authentic the food is, but this place was recommended to me when I first moved to Salt Lake. The smothered burrito with cheese is loaded with cheese and sauces, and it's pretty tasty. The service has not been great, I'm sad to say, and I'm wondering if the "salsa" they put on the table for the chips are salsa, or it was a mixture of a couple hot sauces. I'm no salsa expert, but their salsa tastes like some sort of hot sauce to me.

    (3)
  • RaShea D.

I sometimes come here with the work crew for lunch. Without a doubt we all get smothered burritos with cheese. Only about $5, and it fills you up. Once I strayed and got a side of rice and was charged $3 more, though it was only supposed to be a dollar. Oh, well, I paid, left a tip, and went on my way, having learned a valuable lesson not to stray from my normal special! The burrito is always good, the chips and salsa awesome, and more often than not our server has been very agreeable. Once or twice we got sucky ones, but that happens just about anywhere.

  • Sonia J.

The place is harmless to me. I don't hate it, but I definitely don't love it. I always get the fajitas which are good, but then pretty much every Mexican place has decent fajitas. One big plus is that they now have low-carb fajitas - no tortilla, beans and rice and they knock about $4 off the price for that. All Mexican restaurants should be offering low-carb versions of their popular dishes, considering that's the reason people feel terrible after eating Mexican food (it's not the spicy stuff in case you haven't figured that out yet, Sherlock). The "salsa" that comes with the chips is actually really tasty (and usually fairly spicy, sorry wimps). If you want really good Mexican food go to El Paisa or some hole-in-the-wall that nobody has ever yelped about. If you want Mexican food that will please gringo Utahns, go to Red Iguana.

One word-- RIP OFF. This is a rip off place parading itself as a mexican restaurant. The sign says home cooking but its anything but. The food is horrible. This is just like one of those tourist traps in Mexico. I got corn enchiladas (2)and the lunch price on the check was 15.43 but the price on menu was 10.43. We asked the owner cum waiter and he says did you not get flour tortillas, that's why its $5 more for that. No I had asked for corn tortillas and you gave me flour tortillas. The scary part is this guy is so good at insincerity that at the moment he is able to come to a good explanation for his attempt at rip off. Seedy characters. Food is ok for this part of the country. The place is huge, meant to lure the people in UTAH who may like bland food.

"Fear and loathing (or at least loathing) in Salt Lake City. We arrived on a frigid winter's eve, the day of the Captain's beloved Sister-in-Law's birthday, shortly after Christmas. Her entourage included a total of eight. The Captain and Ma arrived about 20 minutes before the others, and noted this quite large joint, to be clean and decently appointed. The Captain secured an "eight top" and we settled in to wait for the rest of our party. The chips were delicious and freshly fried. We also sampled the salsa which was served in squeeze bottles like ketchup! Dubiously, we tasted, and could not believe how good it was! So far... Wow! Having been served no ice water when we were seated, chipped, salsa'd and menu'd, (a failing, many Mexican joints share, alas) The Captain, wishing to slake our appetizer induced thirst, noted a beer and margarita bar across the room, with a young man working behind it. The Captain sauntered over, (as"old salts" do) and addressed this worthy, saying, "Our server seems a bit swamped at the moment. "May I order two Modelo Especial's on our table's tab and just take them over myself?" "That won't be necessary sir, I'll be right over with them!" Taking him at his word, I returned to Ma and waited, and waited, and waited... Finally, I spied a middle aged woman, coiffed, bejewelled and outlandishly shoehorned into a black spandex outfit, working behind the same bar, whom I immediately pegged as a manager. I walked back over and said "I ordered two Modelo's here a while ago, and..." Abruptly cutting me off in mid-sentence, she snapped, "Order your drinks from your server!", then turned her back on me! Cravenly retreating, I found our server tableside, and re-ordered our beers, which finally arrived a few minutes later. Still no ice water, until we asked. Our group filtered in, and after perusing menus, we ordered dinners and refreshments. True to her character, the "birthday girl", insisted on picking up the check. I stated, being cognizant of her being Mormon, that Ma and I would pick up the alcohol tab, which was agreeable. Our orders arrived, and "mine" was abruptly plunked down in front of me by the "Spandex Duchess" who without a word, skedaddled. It wasn't what I had ordered. Looking about, and seeing our valiant Server desperately trying to handle one other eight top as well as at least two more doubles, I peered about for other assistance. Spotting a fellow sporting a bright red, monogrammed pullover, who was leaving the kitchen and heading in our direction, I put up my hand, and said "Excuse me". Swaggering past our table, as only a manager can, he looked me right in the eye and kept on going. The Hero in this travesty of a dinner service, was our poor Server, who appeared before us, sweating, and looking wildly about, as he scanned for other fires needing extinguishing. He apologized, retrieved the plate and hustled it to the kitchen. How he managed this, despite his other burdens, The Captain and Ma do not know, yet we marveled at it. His talents would certainly grace one of this joint's better competitors. The correct plate, which was a wet burrito finally arrived, and The Captain tucked in with gusto... The cubes of meat inside, were at first unidentifiable. They were flavorless, fibrous and tough. It took awhile as Ma and I shared, tasted, and conferred, and concluded it was "pork". The sauce inside was just bizarre. The dominant flavor was that of Lipton onion soup mix! The rest of the meal was just "ok", although my sister-in-law ordered the chimichanga and loved it. Everyone else save Ma, who didn't much like her dish either, seemed happy. In a spirit of charity, we conferred again and decided "2 stars". During this, I noted the "Spandex Duchess" was seated at an empty table, listlessly rolling silverware "setups", as her overworked Server, nearly killed himself trying to do an impossible job. She spared not a glance in his direction or paid any attention whatsoever to what was going on in the dining area. Gott im himmel! As we left, I approached the cashier's station to settle up the drink tab, and found "Red Pullover" there, and as I paid him he asked disinterestedly, "How was It?" Considering for a moment, my answer, I responded. "Well, it's a long story". "No good huh?" he snorted back, sneering slightly. And I said, "You can read all about it on yelp.com ." And so he may, if he has the skills. Any shred of compassion we felt towards these managers was blown far out to sea by this outrageous behavior. Ma and I knew then, and there. ONE STAR! (The Captain smacks the gavel) "These procedings are closed!" Muttering under his breath, he added "And hopefully this crap emporium soon will be too!" There are a few "tex mex" places of this type in the valley but this is by far the best one. And with the $5 smothered burrito special on the menu, it is great food at a great price.

ONE STAR! (The Captain smacks the gavel) "These procedings are closed!" Muttering under his breath, he added "And hopefully this crap emporium soon will be too!" This place is dirty and poorly managed, but we always always get new menus, why because the prices keep going up, they must use diesel in the food for the price to keep changing, the service is horrible and the food is out of a can. The burritos at taco bell have more flavor. want good Mexican food drive to woods Cross and eat at Lorena's. Great food and service and the prices are very fair.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
